All About the Dried Ghast in Minecraft 1.21.6

With the Minecraft 1.21.6 update, players can now interact with a new mob family: the Ghast Evolution chain. It starts with the Dried Ghast, a collectible and growable creature that eventually evolves into a rideable Happy Ghast.

Where to Find the Dried Ghast

Dried Ghasts can be found in the Soul Sand Valley biome within the Nether, specifically near Nether fossils made of bone blocks. They have a chance of spawning next to these fossils. You can also obtain them through bartering with piglins or by crafting them with ghast tears and a bone block.

Location: Soul Sand Valley

Tool Needed: None — just simply click with the left mouse button

Crafting Dried Ghast

Dried ghasts are now crafted with 8 ghast tears and 1 soul sand:

Growing Dried Ghast

When a dried ghast is submerged in water, it initiates a rehydration process: green particles appear, and the ghast gradually develops a smiling expression and becomes brighter in color. These visual changes appear in stages, becoming noticeable after 5 minutes (partially hydrated), more pronounced after 10 minutes (mostly hydrated), and visually complete (hydrated) after 15 minutes. After 20 minutes, it transforms into a ghastling, which matures over time into a happy ghast.

If the water is removed during the process, the ghast slowly reverts back to the original, dried state at the same rate as it hydrates. Breaking a dried ghast instantly reverts it to the dried state.

How to Craft a Happy Ghast harness?

What Can You Do With a Happy Ghast?

Once fully grown and saddled, the Happy Ghast becomes one of the most exciting mounts in Minecraft:
Fly freely through the Overworld and Nether
Use the new Locator Bar to navigate mid-air
Can be customized with banners or colored saddles
It’s possible to fly with a ghast even with more than one player.
