Storage VPS: when you need space, not speed
From 500 GB to 12 TB of RAID-protected capacity for backups, archives and files. Servers in a Tier III data center in Vilnius.
The Redfox Cloud VPS range now has a third line — Storage VPS. It answers one very specific question: where do you keep a lot of data without paying NVMe prices for it?
Why capacity sometimes matters more than speed
When you buy a regular virtual server you are paying for three things: processor time, memory and disk speed. NVMe SSD is the most expensive part of that set, which is why its capacity is counted in tens of gigabytes. While the server is working — running a website, a database, an application — that is exactly the right price to pay.
But a large share of your data is not working. Backups, project archives, last year's paperwork, photo and video libraries simply sit there and wait. They need neither a high-frequency processor nor hundreds of thousands of IOPS. They need space, and a guarantee that they will still be there tomorrow.
That is what Storage VPS is for. It is the same full KVM virtual server with root access and an operating system you pick from the list in the control panel — only the disk subsystem is different. Instead of small, fast NVMe, it runs on high-capacity drives combined into a RAID array. Capacity from 500 GB to 12 TB, starting at €4.99 per month.
How much space you actually need
The most common mistake when buying storage is counting only what is used today. Once you keep two generations of backups or plan a year ahead, the requirement usually doubles or triples. Move the slider to see which plan fits your case.
Data you have today
1 TB
That much space holds roughly
- 0 photos at 5 MB each
- 0 hours of 1080p video
- 0 virtual machine backups at 20 GB each
You will need about
1 TB

How much space the same money buys
The gap between storage and a working server is not measured in percentages. Here is roughly how many gigabytes ten euros of monthly fee buys in each line.
That is a difference of roughly thirty to forty times. In practice the answer is usually not one server instead of the other, but both together: a working server where speed matters, and a Storage VPS next to it where space matters.
What people use it for
Backups
The most common scenario. The server becomes the target your working servers or computers send their backups to every night. It works with restic, BorgBackup, rsync, Duplicati and Proxmox Backup Server — you pick the software yourself, because you have root access.
Archives and documents
Finished projects, accounting, contracts, technical documentation. Data you do not touch daily but cannot delete, often for legal or bookkeeping reasons. Keeping it on a working NVMe server means paying several times more for the same byte.
Media library
Photo and video archives grow faster than anything else. A few hundred hours of 1080p footage is already a terabyte. A Storage VPS holds the library, and with Jellyfin or similar it is reachable from anywhere — just remember this server is not built for transcoding.
File server and sync
Nextcloud, Syncthing, SFTP or a plain Samba share for the team. A place where the files belong to you rather than to someone else's cloud, and where capacity does not run out after the twentieth document.

What to know up front
RAID is not a backup
RAID protects you from a drive failure, not from an accidental delete, ransomware or a mistyped command. A Storage VPS is a place to keep backups, not a replacement for having them.
This is HDD, not SSD
Writing and reading large files works well, but a busy database or an active website on this kind of disk will be slower than on NVMe. The Essential and Power lines exist for that work.
One copy in one building is still one copy
The 3-2-1 rule says at least one copy should sit in a different physical location. A Storage VPS is a very good second or third copy next to your local disk — but on its own it is not enough if you have no others.
